“Amalickiah Departs to the Land of Nephi”

Monte S. Nyman

Amalickiah demonstrates an example of uninspired leadership. If the uninspired leader doesn’t get his way, he dissents from the group and pulls away those who will follow with him (v. 29). Captain Moroni recognizes another trait of the uninspired leader, to stir up his followers to anger (v. 30). However, the efforts of Amalickiah were thwarted and the flag of liberty did wave (v. 36). Moroni’s offer of “a covenant of fr eedom” or death (v. 35) is an example of the balance between justice and mercy explained by Alma (see Alma 42). Although there was peace in the land, it was short-lived.
