“Moroni Gathered Together All the People Who Were Desirous to Maintain Their Liberty”

Brant Gardner

Moroni’s tactic of gathering people out of dissenting areas and consolidating the faithful created a visual contrast in the numbers. Within their own lands, the dissenters may have looked like a majority but with a strong minority population. When that minority was pulled out, the apparent size of the dissenting cities decreased, while the numbers of the loyal Nephites greatly increased. Seeing this disparity, Amalickiah and his followers left the land of Zarahemla and went to the land of Nephi. Their destination confirms the characteristics of their dissent. They fit better in Lamanite territory than in Nephite because they had adopted more Lamanite concepts. They, like the Amlicites/Amalekites and Zoramites before them, failed to convert the main Nephite population to “Lamanitism” (or at least Nehorism) and moved en masse to a land compatible with their chosen lifestyle.
