Mormon makes Amalickiah the focal point for the ills of Nephite society; but with the advantage of historical distance, we can see that Amalickiah was not a super-villain. He may have been a persuasive catalyst, but the Nephite pot was already simmering. Amalickiah simply added the right amount of extra heat to set it boiling.
