“They Grew Proud, Being Lifted Up in Their Hearts”

Brant Gardner

The churches had been established early in the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges, and some dissensions had already occurred before the year’s end (Alma 50:1). Thus, the revival lasted less than a year, signaling that pressures against the Nephite religion and way of life are mounting rapidly. These are internal dissensions, not Lamanite attacks. The Nephite political hegemony is beginning to fall apart from within.

Text: There is no chapter break at this location in the 1830 edition. Indeed, the 1830 edition did not have a chapter break until the end of our current chapter 49, which concludes the nineteenth year. Mormon is now organizing his units as his source material does—by year markers.
