“Moroni Returned the Sword and the Weapons of War”

Brant Gardner

Moroni returns Zerahemnah’s weapons. Again, this is a formal, ritual action—one that obeys some code of honor. When Zerahemnah relinquished his weapons, he was making a formal treaty offer. Moroni rejects Zerahemnah’s attempt to modify the conditions of surrender and returns his weapons. His pronouncement formally invokes the second of the either-or conditions he had set up.
