Even before the garden, the plan of salvation was prepared. Adam and Eve’s actions did not surprise Yahweh; they fulfilled his plan laid out in the premortal life. Many Christians who believe in God’s foreknowledge yet imagine that Adam was somehow able to foil God’s original plan to have us stay in the garden. While we certainly experience a very human longing for the garden rather than the lone and dreary world, God knew that our ability to grow was thwarted in the garden. We would gain knowledge only by interaction with the sometimes painful agency that flourished in the lone and dreary world.
