The above precepts, identified in the opening of this chapter, remind us of the beatitude in the Sermon On The Mount, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (3 Nephi 12:7; Matthew 5:7). They also remind us of the second great commandment, “thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matthew 22:39). Note that both mercy and judgment will be a part of a righteous judgment (Alma 41:14). For that which you send out shall be returned reminds us of another teaching: “cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days” (Ecclesiastes 11:1).
The restoration, as defined by Alma, is a blessing to those who make a right choice, but is a curse to the sinner (Alma 41:15).
