“Do Not Risk One More Offense Against Your God Upon Those Points of Doctrine”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

It appears quite evident from these verses that Corianton had been espousing a doctrine of salvation solely by the mercy or grace of God, and that he was much offended with the idea that he would be punished for his transgressions. Any doctrine that does not make sin abhorrent is not of God. The idea that salvation can be obtained independent of personal righteousness was first espoused by Lucifer when he sought the throne of God in the premortal councils. As repentance is to precede baptism, so righteousness is to precede the receipt of the gift of the Holy Ghost.
