“According to His Desires”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

“Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection” (D&C 130:18). This is how the Prophet Joseph Smith expressed an important dimension of the doctrine of restoration. There is no discontinuity in one’s spiritual make-up in the transition from this world to the next. Goodness translates to goodness, evil to evil. Concerning the latter, if we align ourselves in this life with that which is evil, eschewing repentance, then this same disposition will continue with us into the next sphere of existence. The law of the harvest is the principle by which we progress and are blessed (see D&C 130:20–21). We are judged according to our desires, the thoughts of our hearts, and our works. Let us follow the counsel of Alma and make a plan to be good, for we shall be restored—good for good, evil for evil.
