“The Spirits of All Men Whether Good or Evil Are Taken Home to That God”

Brant Gardner

Alma has already confirmed to Corianton that it was “just as easy” for Yahweh to send an angel now as later (Alma 39:19). Alma’s angel had already come; and if the angels have come, then the Messiah will come. The essential information is that, in this interim between death and resurrection, “the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life.” Everyone is treated fairly; all are taken back to Yahweh—not assigned to some existence outside of Yahweh’s mercy. Note the similarity to Ecclesiastes 12:7: “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Both the Old World and the New World prophets see this “return” as balancing the separation caused by the Fall.
