The strictest scriptural definition for soul is the union of body and spirit (see 2 Nephi 9:13; D&C 88:15.) More commonly, however, the word soul refers to the spirit of man, either in its unembodied state (see Abraham 3:23) or its disembodied state (see Alma 40:7, 9, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23).
