“Endureth to the End”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
There is no retirement in the realm of spiritual things. It would be as foolish to suppose that we could cease to eat as it would be to suppose that we no longer needed to nourish our spirits or keep our covenants. See commentary on 1 Nephi 13:37.

“Chief Judge”

The plight of the Church seemed to dictate to Alma that he needed to focus his efforts and his strength where they could be of greatest benefit- on the spiritual well-being of society. Inasmuch as the Nephite society was governed by the voice of the people, it appears that Alma made to the people a recommendation for his replacement and then sought their voice in the matter. They sustained Nephihah as the second governor or chief judge, while Alma continued and intensified his priestly labors.
