“According to Their Faith in God”

Jana Reiss

The Liahona only worked “by faith,” meaning that only a righteous person could exercise it. (During the perilous journey to the Americas, Laman and Lemuel had tied Nephi up and tried to steer the ship themselves with disastrous consequences. The Liahona refused to work for them, and the whole party got lost and almost died in a terrible sea squall; see 1 Nephi 18.)
