“My Servant Gazelem”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

These verses refer to the record of the Jaredites inscribed on the twenty-four gold plates found during the time of kings Limhi and Mosiah. Verse 23 tells of the Lord saying that “my servant Gazelem” would use a stone specially prepared to translate the record and publish it to the world. That record is the Book of Mormon, including the book of Ether (an abridgment of the Jaredite record), and it was translated and published by the Prophet Joseph Smith. In editions of the Doctrine and Covenants before 1981, some code names were used in several sections. There the Prophet was called “Gazelam,” a likely variant of the Book of Mormon name (see a pre-1981 edition, D&C 78:9; 82:11; 104:26).
