“Preserve the Records for a Wise Purpose in God”

Monte S. Nyman

Alma returned to the promise of prospering in the land by keeping the commandments (v. 13). However, he does so with a tie-in to the sacred records that God is entrusting to Helaman (v. 14). Alma’s prophecy, that the loss of the records could only come through transgression (v. 15), was verified when Martin Harris lost the 116 pages of the Book of Mormon manuscript (see D&C 10:1–3). The second part of the prophecy, that no power on earth or hell could take them from Helaman if he kept the commandments (Alma 37:16), was verified by the failure of various individuals and mobs who attempted to get the plates from Joseph Smith after he obtained them from the angel Moroni (see Joseph Smith—History 1:59–60). Thus Alma’s promise, that the Lord would preserve these things (all of the sacred records and instruments that Alma is giving to Helaman for future generations (Alma 37:17–18), is still being fulfilled. Not only were thousands and thousands of people brought to the knowledge of their Redeemer in the future years of the Nephites and Lamanites (up to about 400 B.C.), but millions of modern-day Lamanites, and others of the house of Israel who were scattered among the gentiles, have been taught from the Book of Mormon, “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” These converts are basically descendants of Joseph who was sold into Egypt through the loins of Ephraim and Manasseh, from whom Lehi and Ishmael were descended. The early members of the Church were similarly descended from Joseph of Egypt, as confirmed by patriarchal blessings.
