“My Son Helaman, I Command You That Ye Take the Records”

Brant Gardner

Text: While there is a division between Alma’s testimony and his instructions to Helaman, they both happen on the same occasion and are connected through Alma’s opening statement: “My son, give ear to my words;… inasmuch as ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall prosper in the land. I would that ye should do as I have done… ” (Alma 36:1–2).

Alma’s entire discourse is related to this opening, not just the section recounting his conversion. Alma wants Helaman to assume his responsibilities, taking over from his father; and this entire discourse is given for that purpose. Helaman should follow Alma, not only as a disciple of Christ but in keeping the records. His faithfulness will activate the promise that he will prosper in the land. Thus, in showing Helaman how he is part of the Nephite lineage promise, Alma now makes the connection even more specific. Helaman will become part of that chain of illustrious ancestors since Alma is symbolically placing them in his care. The actual transfer of the records happens in the beginning of the nineteenth year (Alma 45:2), and Alma is speaking in the eighteenth year.
