“If Ye Keep the Commandments of God Ye Shall Prosper in the Land”

Monte S. Nyman

Alma ends the description of his rebirth with the chiastic pattern of repeating in reverse order the things with which he had begun. He was supported in his trials (v. 27, compare v. 3). He praised his God for the delivery of his fathers at various times (vv. 28–29, compare v. 2), and he testified that those who keep the commandments will prosper (v. 30; compare v. 1). Whether Alma knowingly used chiasmus or if it had just fallen into place as he spoke by the Spirit cannot be proven, but it is an interesting pattern.
