“Those Who Were in Favor of Alma and His Brethren Were Cast Out”

Brant Gardner

Culture: Amulek may well have foreseen this action, taken against their new converts, in warning them that they would need patience in their afflictions (Alma 34:40–41). He may have even foreseen their eventual expulsion. The converts who arrived in Jershon, though among a people willing to accept them and to include them, were landless and even poorer than before. Doubtless, the ministrations of Alma and his brethren dealt with meeting their temporal needs, helping them find arable land, and preparing it for crops. Until the first harvest, the people of Jershon would be drawing on their own resources to feed these refugees.
