Zoramite leaders had every reason to fear a rebellion, particularly one among the farmers who produced their food. It was therefore logical to expel those tainted by egalitarian ideas. While their loss would at least temporarily reduce the agricultural base, it would also short-circuit growing discontent that could lead to full-scale religious conversion and political rebellion.
