“For It Is Expedient That an Atonement Should Be Made or Else All Mankind Must Unavoidably Perish”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Christ brings about an infinite Atonement on behalf of the sons and daughters of God. Our souls are filled with gratitude to the Redeemer in contemplating “the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit” (2 Nephi 2:8). Remember that we are in a fallen state and would “unavoidably perish” (Alma 34:9) were it not for the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It is incumbent upon us to never forget the blessing of the Atonement in our lives and to always remember to be grateful to our Heavenly Father and our Savior for this infinite and eternal sacrifice for the children of God. As we remember, our gratitude will move us to righteous action: we will repent and apply the Atonement to our lives. If we fail to do this, we must suffer (see D&C 19:15–19). Heavenly Father has given us the choice.
