Amulek stresses that these people should have known about the coming of the Messiah. Indeed, their original question about the “one God” suggests as much, and Amulek asserts that they had learned this doctrine “before your dissension from among us” to affiliate with the Zoramites. Even though I have analyzed this particular people as existing in the land when the Zoramites arrived (see commentary accompanying Alma 33:1), they were nevertheless politically Zoramites and had at least attempted to adopt Zoramite worship, including laboring to build the synagogue (Alma 32:5). Thus, Amulek is correct in addressing them as dissenters.
