“And If So”

Brant Gardner

This verse has the appearance of a contradiction. Alma declares that they are lowly in heart, and then qualifies it by say “if so.” The intent here is not to contradict Alma’s observation, but rather to emphasize the blessing that comes from the perceived humility. The “if” does not apply to Alma’s perception but rather to the humility of the people. Alma is saying that if they are humble they are blessed. The sentence is perhaps better rephrased; “I behold that ye are lowly in heart, and if you are humble, then blessed are ye.”
