“They Did Go Forth and Began to Preach the Word”

W. Cleon Skousen

Right from the very beginning, the missionaries went forth to teach their message of repentance in tracting, cottage meetings and street meetings. They even taught in the synagogues, but we feel quite certain they were never invited to ascend one of the Rameumptons and proclaim the gospel from one of those high towers. Nevertheless the vigorous manner in which they went forth to preach the gospel is demonstrated from the first verse.

It is the universal experience of the Lord’s missionaries that the first people to sympathetically listen to them are usually the poor. Therefore the scripture says:

“And it came to pass that after much labor among them, they began to have success among the poor class of people; for behold, they were cast out of the synagogues because of the coarseness of their apparel -- Therefore they were not permitted to enter into their synagogues to worship God, being esteemed as filthiness; therefore they were poor; yea, they were esteemed by their brethren as dross; therefore they were poor as to things of the world; and also they were poor in heart.”
