“Their Afflictions Had Truly Humbled Them”

After a lot of hard work, the missionaries began to have success among the poor class of people, those who were poor in worldly things and also poor in heart—that is, lowly or meek in heart (compare the opposite, “stubbornness of heart,” in v. 16). As is often the case in missionary work today, their afflictions had humbled the people, and they were prepared to listen.
