“Ye Have the Testimony”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

There is irrefutable evidence and unassailable testimony for the existence of God. Alma enumerates these for Korihor—including the truth of the scriptures, the witness of all the holy prophets past and present, and the order and glory of the Creation. We can know the truth of all things by the power of the Holy Ghost (see Moroni 10:3–5). We can see God in all things if we will but have eyes to see and hearts that feel. Surely all these magnificent creations are not by happenstance but by the hand of our God. By following the promptings of the Spirit, we can stand strong against those who would refute the truths of the of Jesus Christ. Korihor, like all wicked people, seeks for a sign. He is given his sign by being struck dumb. It is only then that he confesses that he has known the truth all along, having been deceived by the devil. His demise is a type of the ultimate fate of all anti-Christs, for he is “trodden down, even until he [is] dead” (Alma 30:59). By holding to the rod of iron and following the whisperings of the Spirit, we can protect ourselves and our families from the soulless invective and destructive rhetoric of the anti-Christs.

In modern scripture, the Lord gives us this advice and promise:

Wherefore, meaning the church, thou shalt give heed unto all his [i.e. the Prophet Joseph’s] words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;
For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.
For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory. (D&C 21:4–6)

In recent times, President Howard W. Hunter provided this modern-day witness:

History tells us there is a God. Science confirms the fact there is a Supreme Being. Human reasoning persuades us that there is a God. His own revelations to man leave no doubt as to his existence. In order for an individual to obtain unwavering knowledge of the reality of God, he must live the commandments and the doctrines announced by the Savior during his personal ministry. “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” (John 7:16–17.) In other words, those who are willing to make the search, apply themselves, and do God’s will, will have the knowledge come to them of the reality of God. (70–01, p. 34)
A knowledge of God adds meaning to life. When a man has found God and understands his ways, he learns that nothing in the universe came by chance, but all things resulted from a divinely prearranged plan. What a rich meaning comes into his life! Understanding which surpasses worldly learning is his. If all men could find God and follow his ways, the hearts of men would be turned in love toward their brothers, and nations would be at peace. (The Teachings of Howard W. Hunter, ed. Clyde J. Williams [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1997], 3)
