“And They Were Among the People of Nephi”

Brant Gardner

Culture: Mormon identifies two important social markers for this people. By being “among the people of Nephi,” they had politically become Nephites, not Lamanites. Second, they affiliated with Yahweh’s religion, rather than a different option—of which the Nephites had at least two: Yahweh’s way and the order of the Nehors. There may have been others but those are the two largest factions. Mormon describes the people’s assimilation in the two most important categories required of people in the land of Zarahemla: politics and religion.
