“The Amalekites and the Amulonites Stir the People Up”

Monte S. Nyman

Once more Satan goes to work through the apostate Nephites— he did “rage in the hearts of the [Amalekites and Amulonites], and stir them up to anger against that which is good [the people of Anti- Nephi-Lehi]” (2 Nephi 28:20). We must not assume that the king yielded to pressure in conferring the kingdom upon his son (Alma 24:3). He undoubtedly did so because of his age since he died the same year (v. 4). The new king being given the name of Anti-Nephi-Lehi further suggests the concept of the meaning of “anti” being “in the image of” as suggested above by Dr. Nibley. Therefore, the king wanted his son to be like Nephi and Lehi, the great prophet and the great patriarch who led their people to this continent.
