“Be Convinced Concerning the Wicked Traditions of Their Fathers”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: The king wants his people to “be convinced concerning the wicked traditions of their fathers” and realize “that they were all brethren.” A cascade of positive events would follow: “They ought not to murder, nor to plunder, nor to steal, nor to commit adultery, nor to commit any manner of wickedness.” These are unquestionably Mormon’s words. Regardless of the king’s conversion and his willingness to have the gospel preached, he would not have described his people in such negative terms. However, even though this list of traits is formulaic and somewhat exaggerated, they probably contained an accurate core. This list shows a Lamanite king reversing the Nephite standard list of Lamanite cultural traits. It is intended to show their conversion to the Nephite religion by accepting the Nephite cultural traits rather than continuing to “act like Lamanites.” (See commentary accompanying Alma 17:14, 50:21 and Helaman 6:17.)
