“Up into the South Wilderness”

Brant Gardner

Verse 31 continues the geographic/historical description of the people of Zarahemla, better known to modern readers as “Mulekites,” although that name is never used in the text. The ancestral Mulekites landed (obviously on a shore) and from there went “up” into the south wilderness. They then continued “up” until they followed the Sidon to the site of the city of Zarahemla. This description gives us their direction of travel and comparative elevation (“up” to higher ground). It does not tell us, however, when this migration took place.
