“What Shall I Do That I May Have… Eternal Life… ?”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

From Adam’s day to ours, and from ours to that time when the last of the human family draws a breath on this mortal sphere, this is the grand question of all existence: What must we do to obtain eternal life? Such was the question addressed by the rich young ruler to the Master. “Keep the commandments,” was the Savior’s answer. “Which?” came the rejoinder.

Christ reviewed the ten commandments of Sinai. “The young man saith unto him: All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, if thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.” (Matthew 19:16-22.)
