“Aaron and His Brethren Were Taken and Cast into Prison”

Brant Gardner

Redaction: The three united missionaries reach Middoni, where they are first imprisoned, then freed by Ammon and Lamoni. Part of Mormon’s purpose in this fast-moving narrative has been to reach intersection points in the story. This is one. While Muloki and Ammah might have been of a lesser status and therefore “assigned” to a village rather than a city, nevertheless, it is not unreasonable to hypothesize that they also recorded their labors, as Ammon and Aaron obviously did. Yet Mormon includes no earlier history of Muloki and Ammah or their preaching.

Aaron’s experiences in Jerusalem, though brief, are still more fully told than those of Muloki and Ammah. I hypothesize that Mormon was using Aaron’s record for this section of his narrative. Muloki and Ammah appear at this point in Mormon’s record because this is where they appeared in Aaron’s. Perhaps Mormon had records about Muloki and Ammah, and perhaps he did not. This section, however, must have come from Aaron’s record.
