What did the order of the Nehors believe?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The order of the Nehors [see Alma 21:4] believed that meeting together constituted a worship of God (see Alma 21:6). They held that God would save all men (see Alma 21:6) and denied the coming of Jesus Christ, for they did not believe that future events could be known (see Alma 21:7–8). Their beliefs were abhorrent to the righteous and to God” (Black, 400 Questions and Answers, 156).

Why did Aaron begin by asking about the coming of Jesus Christ? (21:7) “Aaron has gone to the heart of erroneous Nehorite theology, which denies the doctrine of the Atoning Messiah” (Gardner, Second Witness, 4:324).

What was the doctrinal difference between the beliefs of the Nephites and those of the Nehors? (21:8) “The Amalekite reveals the doctrinal difference between the Nephites and the Nehors, first by denying an important doctrine, then by denying that there is any evidence for it, and finally by impugning the tradition that would encourage belief in that doctrine. By stating that these are ‘thy fathers and also … our fathers,’ the Amalekite is not only dismissing belief in the Atoning Messiah but also in revelation (‘concerning … that which is to come’)” (Gardner, Second Witness, 4:324).
