“As They Were Journeying Thither, They Met the Father of Lamoni”

Brant Gardner

Ammon and Lamoni encounter Lamoni’s father en route, the same man Lamoni had wanted to introduce Ammon to but of whom Yahweh warned that he would attempt to kill Ammon (v. 1). We must assume that Yahweh, who warned Ammon not to go to Lamoni’s father, knew very well that they would meet Lamoni’s father on the road. Presumably, this setting is important in preserving Ammon’s life. On the road instead of in the king’s court, Ammon is less governed by protocol and, most significantly, is armed.
