This verse corroborates the hypothesis that Lamoni’s executions were not universally approved, even though they had been obediently carried out. Even Lamoni had wondered if Ammon (as demi-god) had come to punish him for those deaths (Alma 18:2). It seems likely that Lamoni’s admittedly inadequate response to the power struggle being launched by his rivals had become an issue in the court.
