“The Queen Heard of the Fame of Ammon”

Brant Gardner

Mormon has omitted details that are unimportant to him, passing rapidly from the king’s falling to events two days later. Surely the scene must have been dramatic, with Lamoni’s collapse at the moment of calling on a new God creating great alarm, concern, and intense speculation.

Since Ammon is free to attend the queen when she summons him, he was not being blamed for Lamoni’s state, although detaining him or demanding that he restore the king would have been a natural reaction. Perhaps the other servants still considered him “more than a man.” Mormon’s silence obscures what must have been a vivid description of the prayer’s aftermath.
