In the ultimate sense, only God knows the thoughts and intents of the children of men (see verse 32; D&C 6:16). On occasion, however, he does grant to his chosen servants the discerning and revelatory powers needed to know the motives and dispositions of those they teach or confront (see Jacob 7:14; Alma 11:24; Alma 30:42).
