Ammon didn't realize it, but this assignment could have gotten him killed. The shepherds had barely gotten the king's flocks out to a watering hole when they were attacked by a crowd of hoodlums who made it a habit to scatter the king's flocks and then steal some of them before they could be gathered together again. Ammon found out that when this happened the king's servants became violently frightened. He soon found out why.
