“They Departed into the Wilderness with Their Numbers Which They Had Selected”

Brant Gardner

The mention of “their numbers” tells us that an unspecified number of other men accompanied them. The extra number logically allowed not only a larger number of hunters but a more thorough sentry system as they camped. They would have been alert, not only against human foes, but against predators such as jaguars. Unfortunately, these other companions disappear immediately and completely from the record. The story of the sons of Mosiah was recounted to their friend Alma, who created the natural funnel of familiarity that collapsed the actions of these other men into those of his good friends who were the focus of his interest.
