“See That Ye Had Not Power to Save Them”

Brant Gardner

After connecting the martyrs’ burning with Alma’s prediction about the lake of fire and brimstone, he sarcastically asserts that the believers’ death proves that they were not saved. “Ye had not power to save those who had been cast into the fire,” he mocks Alma and Amulek, and “neither has God saved them” (emphasis mine). A major ideological difference between the Nehorite and Nephite religions was their definitions of salvation. Alma had stressed the necessity of achieving salvation by repenting from sin (the second death); and the chief judge mocks them by noting that the believers had no salvation from an immediate physical death.
