“They Sought to Put Them Away Privily”

Brant Gardner

Translation: Privily (the opposite of “publicly”) is used with some frequency in the King James Version; however, the phrase put away privily is used only once: “Then Joseph her [Mary’s] husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily” (Matt. 1:19). This well-known verse was probably Joseph Smith’s model.
