“The Day of Salvation Draweth Nigh”

Monte S. Nyman

Alma’s declaration that now is the time to repent (v. 21) was stated even more forcibly by Amulek to the Zoramites (see Alma 34:32–35). We will leave our discussion on this topic until then.

Alma’s testimony that angels are declaring the gospel unto other nations and unto many in their land (Alma 13:22–24) is not supported with any evidence. However, the principle is eternal and Alma knows the principle from personal experience. He may also have known specifically, by revelation. An angel had ministered to him and to Amulek and sent them to minister to these and other people (see Alma 8:14–20).

The year is about 82 B.C. The coming of Christ was near although Alma knew not how soon. His wish that it would be in his day (Alma 13:25) indicates his desire for wickedness to end and righteousness to reign. Once more Alma’s knowledge of the future is supported by the “words of our fathers … according to the spirit of prophecy” (v. 26). angels did make known to Zechariah, to Mary and Joseph, to the shepherds and, to the wise men in the land of Jerusalem.(see Matthew 1 & 2 and Luke 1 & 2). Angels also ministered to Nephi, son of Nephi, in the America’s (3 Nephi 7:15–18). There were undoubtedly many others in both lands.
