Melchizedek Reigned Under His Father

Daniel H. Ludlow

The statement that Melchizedek reigned "under his father" should not necessarily be interpreted to mean that he reigned at the same time his father was king or even while his father was living. The term "under his father" evidently is a Hebrew idiom meaning that he "takes the place of his father" or "reigns in his father's stead." (For several examples of similar terminology in the Bible, see Genesis 36:33-39.)
