“All His Judgments Are Just”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: Alma is using a device that shows a contradiction that the audience can see but for which they may not know a solution. Such a presentation piques the audience’s interest so that they might better follow the argument. The contrast between verses 15 and 16 sets the stage for the problem that Alma will resolve. The wicked will stand before God and be afraid, but what we should do is stand before him and acknowledge him (v. 15). What makes the difference? That is what Alma will discuss.
