“How Knowest Thou These Things?”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: Zeezrom is setting up Amulek to contradict himself. As an opening ploy, he asks for Amulek’s source of knowledge. When Amulek claims understanding from an angel, he is not quoting established tradition or sources. He is not appealing to a great teacher, to a well-respected person whom the audience can easily accept to lend weight to the argument. If the audience had been willing to accept that Amulek carried angelic authority, the confrontation would not have proceeded to this point.
