The Nephite Monetary System

Daniel H. Ludlow

The monetary system used by the Nephites is briefly explained by Mormon as he recounts the story of Alma and Amulek in the city of Ammonihah. The basic unit is a senine of gold (or a senum of silver, which has the same value). If a value of "1" is attributed to this unit, the monetary system of the Nephites might be summarized as follows: Leah equals 1/8; shiblum = 1/4; shiblon = 1/2; antion of gold = 1 1/2; senum of silver or senine of gold = 1; amnor of silver or seon of gold = 2; ezrom of silver or shum of gold = 4; onti of silver or limna of gold = 7. One senine of gold (or senum of silver) = wages of a judge for one day. The Nephite monetary system was based on a barley standard, with a senine of gold or a senum of silver equal to a measure of barley. (Alma 11:7.)
