Alma explains how this shocking reversal of expectation might take place. Yahweh in his mercy would understand that many of the Lamanites’ false beliefs result from the traditions of their fathers. Therefore, their separation was perhaps not completely the personal choice of the current (or future) generation. In consequence, they can repent in the future and, according to prophecy, be saved.
