Notice that Alma says "the Spirit knoweth all things." This implies that perhaps Alma was not quite certain just how the Atonement operates, but he has a testimony that this is the Father's plan for the redemption of the human family. Then he goes on to say what the people must do to partake of this glorious redemption.
