“Suffering Pains and Afflictions Filled with Mercy that He May Know How to Succor His People”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

What Alma describes is the nurturing power of Christ, who suffered, sacrificed, and loosed the bands of death that He would better be able to bless us in our weakness and infirmities. The Savior makes possible the liberation from sin (see 2 Nephi 2:7). He opens the gates of resurrection through His infinite and eternal Atonement and frees us from the shackles of the devil (see 2 Nephi 9:6–12). He gives us strength to do all things (see Alma 26:11–12). He provides a way to overcome temptation through His word and the power of prayer (see 1 Nephi 15:24–25; 3 Nephi 18:18). When we are scattered, struggling, wayward, and endangered, He seeks to gather and nurture us even as a hen gathers her chicks (see 3 Nephi 10:4–6). He will consecrate our afflictions for our gain (see 2 Nephi 2:2). He will console us (see Jacob 3:1), give us success (see Alma 26:27), support us (see Alma 36:3), and nourish and strengthen us (see 1 Nephi 17:3; Jacob 5:3–5, 11–12, 20–24). We see that the work of the Lord is solely to help us to come unto Him that we might be perfected in Him (see Moroni 10:32).

How do we apply these insights to our own lives on a daily basis? We should come to understand the goodness of our Savior and His overwhelming concern for our well-being in all aspects of our lives. He not only suffered in Gethsemane, died on the cross at Calvary, opened the gates through the power of the Resurrection, and provided all things for us to gain eternal life, but He has a continual concern for each of us individually. He lends us breath (see Mosiah 2:21). He goes before our face to guide us (see D&C 84:85–88). He lends us strength (see Alma 26:12). And He succors us according to our infirmities. Now, are we not filled with gratitude? In humility and thanksgiving we ought to show our love and appreciation by keeping His commandments and serving our fellowmen.
