“Alma Speaks by Commandment to the Church and by Invitation to Others”

Monte S. Nyman

Alma is not only following the Lord’s commandment, but he is using the precise language of the Lord (v. 61). Those who are members of the Church of Christ have committed themselves or covenanted to keep his commandments. Therefore, the things that Alma has told them are included in their covenants. The Lord honors the agency of those who have not entered into a covenant. He invites them to come and partake of eternal life, but they have a choice (v. 62). The invitation to come and be baptized is apparently given in the Lord’s language.
