“Have Ye Been Sufficiently Humble?”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: Alma continues asking the questions that constitute a sort of outline for self-examination. By asking if they have observed a “blameless” walk, he is reminding them that they must live according to gospel principles. He chastises those who have caused, participated in, or responded to strife.

His next question is whether they have “been sufficiently humble.” The relevance of this attribute is that it goes beyond egregious sins against Yahweh’s laws (which would also disrupt society) and to an interior state that nevertheless lies at the root of the social tensions: pride.
